Keeping your Marriage Strong During COVID-19

The year 2020 can be boiled down to one word; Isolation. We are deep into the COVID-19 pandemic, and unfortunately, we’re not out just yet. With no vaccination on the near horizon, isolation will settle, and it may create some conflict between family members.

For some marriages, the extra time together can be relaxing and exciting. However, other couples may have issues that have been pushed aside for normal daily activities and stresses, like work, children, etc.

If you are one of these couples, don’t fret. This time should not be seen as a punishment, but as the time to address all the issues. These are your loved ones, your people. Now that you’re homebound, mending all the problems you have shoved aside may leave you with a happier life when you return to your routine after the pandemic.

Here are a few steps you can take to turn around and rescue your marriage from COVID-19:

Communicate: I know this may be obvious. But really, any sensitive subjects that you have been avoiding should come out now. If you don’t talk, how do you expect others to understand how you feel every day? Share your perspectives and be honest about your feelings. However, an essential part of communication is the ability to listen. Give each other full attention whenever one of you is talking.

Courtesy: We know that life can be overwhelming right now, with how fast it’s all changing. It’s understandable to get upset, but handle it while remaining courteous toward yourself and your spouse. Your spouse is not your enemy. Be patient and respectful.

Teamwork: Being home almost all day every day might reveal all the unclean places in your home. Or maybe you’re stressed out trying to implement virtual learning for your children. Instead of tackling your day by yourself, try to do it as a team. Try to synchronize with each other, rather than further isolating yourself in a lonely separate life full of stress.

Online Counseling: Family therapists are now offering online counseling through Skype, Zoom, or other virtual video platforms. This may be an excellent time to work through those too severe issues to deal with by yourself at home. Don’t try to overcome your challenges alone. Having a third party person to receive advice may be just what your marriage needs.

Being at home right now can seem extraordinarily isolating and lonely, but know that you’re not alone. These are trying times of uncertainty. But we are confident we can help you at least a little bit to get back to your everyday life. Stay Safe, Utah.
