Family Law Attorney can Help with Domestic Abuse

If you are in a difficult situation with a significant other, and there is violence involved, you need to learn of the steps you can take to protect yourself. Physical or emotional abuse is one of the hardest things a person can go through. You may feel confused and without an idea of what you could do to protect yourself.

 Types of Domestic Abuse

Most believe that domestic violence is only physical, but that’s not true at all. Domestic violence could present itself as follows:

  • Physical Abuse;
  • Harassment;
  • Violent Threats;
  • Coercion;
  • Intimidation;
  • Manipulation;
  • Emotional Abuse;
  • and Stalking.

Another common misconception is that domestic violence only happens between intimate couples; it can occur among parents, grandparents, children, and grandchildren. Most states reject domestic violence and have advocates in place to give you advice or help guide you should you need it. The advocates are a team of people available to you to answer any questions you may have and even help you file a restraining order or order of protection. A lawyer assigned to a case like this would work closely with the client to make sure they are comfortable with all the options they may have before proceeding.

You can, however, file an order of protection without an attorney’s guidance. It’s suggested to do so to be better informed of any details you may have missed before continuing to file your order. An attorney is always an invaluable resource to have when you are filing anything with a court. If you feel like you and your children are at risk at any point, a court judge can create his own order against the aggressor.

Keep in mind, though; once you have filed an order of protection, neither party can contact each other during the duration of the order. At no time can you both be together, whether it be one year or two years, so make sure that’s what you want for yourself and your children.

If you have your doubts or questions about seeking help, contact one of our attorneys, we are well armed with resources you can use to help beat this monster. No one should suffer alone in domestic violence, no matter what. You owe it to yourself to be truly happy, not as a shadow behind a tyrant.
